A computer network is a collection of computers, servers,network devices etc. connected to each other to allow sharing of data in other words a thread which connects multiple capable devices. It can be classified into types as mentioned below
- Local Area Network
- Metropolitan Area Network
- Wide Area Network
LOCAL AREA NETWORK :
- Local Area Network is also name as LAN, it is a computer network that interconnects computers within a limited area such as a residence, school, laboratory, university campus or office building
METROPOLITAN AREA NETWORK :
- Metropolitan Area Network is also name as MAN, it is a computer network that interconnects users with computer resources in a geographic region of the size of a metropolitan area. The term MAN is applied to the interconnection of local area networks (LANs) in a city into a single larger network which may then also offer efficient connection to a wide area network.
WIDE AREA NETWORK :
- Wide Area Network is also name as WAN,it is is a telecommunications network that extends over a large geographic area for the primary purpose of computer networking. Wide area networks are often established with leased telecommunication circuits.
Let discuss about some interesting statement :
“Every LAN may or may not be with WAN, but Every WAN will always be with LAN”
To prove above statement I have some examples :
- A net cafe my have several computers connected in LAN.When we surf something on a computer and send the file to the owner of the cafe,we do not require WAN.Files can be transferred via bluetooth or hard drives can be connected to get a print of necessary information.But the internet used by the cafe which is a WAN needs information about the LAN in the cafe to provide the service which is done by router.The LAN in cafe is a part of WAN-the internet.
- There could be a LAN at each office that is sharing printers locally, but with a WAN that connects all the LAN’s together, s the company can share files with everybody.For sharing a file,they do not require a WAN locally in the LAN.But WAN is required to share files globally which is ultimately through LAN.
- In college they have there servers,through this they can communicate with students about assignments and various things .they use local area networks for this they use routers.when students want the access from outside the college they give public address to server for this student require internet.
from above examples we proved this statement.
